Tinfoil Releases New Single “Head On The Wall” Inspired by LA Punk band X’s last tour
Tinfoil is excited to unveil their latest single, “Head on the Wall,” inspired by the legendary LA Punk band X’s final show in Cleveland in 2024. Imagine being at the last live performance of one of your favorite bands—it’s a bittersweet moment, and that’s exactly what Tinfoil writers and founders, Dave Harms and Cher Bibler, experienced last summer at X's last show.
Based in Northwest Ohio, Tinfoil has made a name for itself by blending compelling lyrics with a variety of musical styles. A reviewer aptly described the band as “Tinfoil is a malleable metal with the unique ability to wrap around any musical genre” (Tony Romanov, Detroit Jam Rag). This musical diversity, however, has been a double-edged sword for the band. Cher and Dave hail from different musical backgrounds, with Cher enjoying new wave, Japanese metal, blues, and punk, while Dave leans toward guitar-based rock and metal. “We both like Led Zeppelin, X, Sonic Youth, and the Kinks, but other than that, we are usually listening to vastly different things,” Harms revealed.
This creative tension is a driving force behind Tinfoil’s dynamic sound. Cher brings musical influences that might not typically align with Dave’s style, pushing him to innovate. “That keeps us fresh as songwriters and as a band,” he explained. The band prides itself on merging well-crafted lyrics with exciting guitar-driven music. Cher noted, “Many songs in typical guitar-based music often focus entirely on the guitar and rely heavily on cliched amateurish lyrics. We have worked hard as a band to combine well-crafted lyrics with interesting guitar songs.”
This unique approach has carved out a niche for Tinfoil, making them hard to categorize in an industry often focused on strict genres. “Labels and distributors we’ve worked with in the past have always tried to pigeonhole us with a single genre. Tinfoil just doesn’t fit as we do punk, rock, metal, alternative, and folk on a single album. We go wherever the lyrics demand. It makes us unique, but also hard to market,” lamented Bibler.
The band has faced challenges, especially when it comes to finding drummers. “Unfortunately, most of the drummers we’ve worked with enjoy a specific style of music, like metal, and when they’re asked to play a folk-style song, they balk and leave,” explained bassist Krystal Harms.
X, formed in Los Angeles in 1977, includes iconic members Billy Zoom, Exene Cervanka, John Doe, and DJ Bonebreak. Harms recalled, “I remember hearing ‘White Girl’ as a kid and digging the uniqueness of Doe and Cervanka’s harmonies complemented by an almost rockabilly lead guitar.” Cher and Dave have been devoted fans since Tinfoil’s inception, attending every Midwest show. Cher even became a semi-celebrity at a Detroit show when she passed a note to Exene, requesting the song “Blue Spark.” Exene’s later decision to play the song confirmed to Cher that they were true fans, not just casual listeners.
X released an album in 2024, announcing that it would be their last tour, prompting the Harmses and Bibler to attend together. Following the show, Cher brought the lyrics for “Head on the Wall” to practice, and Dave transformed them into music on an acoustic guitar. After recording a demo that was shelved for six months due to drummer issues, they finally brought in session drummer Horacio Paris from Costa Rica, resulting in fantastic synergy.
The song embodies Tinfoil’s signature rock sound, featuring Bibler’s compelling storytelling and vocal prowess. Heavy guitar riffs pay homage to guitarist Billy Zoom, while maintaining Tinfoil’s distinct style. “Even though we were going for an X vibe, the track still sounds very much like us,” Cher explained.
Since their formation, Tinfoil has released over twenty albums and contributed music to films like “Obstacle Corpse” and “Stoner Snakes.” Their previous singles, such as “Lost in Translation,” “In That Dress,” and “Bone Doll,” have gained traction on playlists worldwide.
Fans of both Tinfoil and X will not want to miss the chance to listen to “Head on the Wall,” now available on all major streaming platforms. Join Tinfoil in celebrating the vibrant connection between music and storytelling as they bring the punk world to life through their dynamic sound.
